My little guy turned 18 months old back in April, so of course I had to capture this special age! I had found the cutest little suspender outfit at H&M that I knew would be just perfect for a session with the Cherry Blossoms down at Branch Brook Park here in northern New, Jersey.
Branch Brook Park is a huge park in Essex County that stretches from Newark up to Belleville. It is known for having the largest collection of Cherry Blossoms in the United States. Peak bloom this year was scheduled to be right around Jonny's 18 month mark, so it seemed perfect!
Well, Mother Nature always has plans of her own... We had an unusually cool spring and the blossoms kept getting delayed further and further. It was looking a bit like there weren't going to be any in time for his session. I was pretty bummed and trying to decide what to do instead, but a few days before the session was planned I had Trevor stop by Branch Brook and see if anything was blossoming. As luck would have it, there were some trees in bloom!
The hot/cold/hot craziness of the spring had kind of put a damper on the blossoming, so not only was it not "peak bloom" yet, but peak bloom wasn't looking like it would be quite the fanfare it usually is since half of the trees were tricked into waiting to bloom. But, nevertheless, we didn't need the whole park to be in bloom! We decided we'd work with what we had!
So the day of the session came up and we got everything all set to go. Jonny--being the stinker that he is--chose that day to refuse to nap all day. Ugh! To top it off, we had another unusually cool evening and Jonny's outfit was just not quite as warm as it should've been for the temperature.
Jon grabbed a quick doze on the way down which probably made things worse since it was rather brief and he was just a hot mess. This normally happy, enthusiastic, giggly baby was just a big old grump! Of course his normally rather difficult on photo shoots big brother was a total champ! Listened to everything and happy as can be. Go figure!
We brought along some jelly beans to bribe with. Well Jonny loved the bribe but didn't exactly love the delayed gratification of "smile first, then you get a bean". Also the beans led to some funky colored drool running down from his little smile sometimes... Haha! Oh well!
We worked hard and ended up with a great collection of images, but boy oh boy was it a chore! Here are some of my favorites from the session. Hope you love them as much as I do!
P.S. I'm looking forward to our big move to California and getting some brand spanking new packaging from Rice Studio Supply and Dazo Packaging! So much excitement going on in the next year! More info to come on all of this, of course, but I just HAD to blurt out some of the most exciting stuff!
